WHAT IS IT
Since the beginning of 2025, all 9 Dow units in Brazil – including operations and the innovation center – have been supplied with 100% of renewable electricity from renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and small hydroelectric plants (PCHs).
This achievement is part of the multinational's decarbonization strategy, which is committed to being carbon neutral (Scope 1 + 2 + 3 plus product benefits) by 2050 and to reducing its annual net carbon emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 5 million metric tons (~15%) by 2030.
To achieve this goal, Dow focused on diversifying its energy mix, with an emphasis on long-term wind and solar energy supply contracts, as well as investing in self-generation of energy, a market trend for large consumers.
RESULTS AND OBJECTIVES
In 2020, Dow signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy, which has guaranteed solar energy supply to the Aratu industrial complex in Bahia since January 2021. The 15-year agreement enabled the construction of the Jacarandá plant in Juazeiro, Bahia. With this agreement, Dow is estimated to be reducing its annual CO2 emissions from operations by approximately 35,000 tons.
In 2021, the company signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Casa dos Ventos to purchase wind energy to supply 75% of the demand at its plant in Cabangu, Minas Gerais. With supply beginning in 2024, the project is estimated to reduce emissions by approximately 100,000 tons of CO2 per year. Also lasting 15 years, the agreement provides for the possibility of financial investment in the wind farm for future self-generation.
In addition, Dow Brasil purchased common shares of Atlas Renewable Energy in three solar plants, aiming to enjoy the benefits of self-production by matching.
