WHAT IS IT
In the search for alternatives to reduce coal consumption, the coke oven at Gerdau's largest plant, located in Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais, uses eucalyptus biomass and sawdust husks. This renewable energy source partially replaces the fossil fuels used in blast furnaces.
RESULTS AND OBJECTIVES
In 2023, approximately 30,000 tons of biomass were used, saving an additional 90,000 tons of CO2eq. Furthermore, the initiative also represents savings of approximately US$$3 per ton of coke and the development of local communities to supply biomass instead of imported coal. The initiative will be refined through further research using corn, coffee, and sugarcane bagasse residues.
Gerdau participated in the development of a technical environmental study led by the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero). The study's scope included identifying the main biomasses available in Latin America that are economically and operationally viable for our industry and can replace fossil fuels used in the steel production process, reducing emissions.
Gerdau is committed to reaching 0.82 tCO2e/t of steel by 2031 (Scopes 1 and 2). The current intensity is 0.91 tCO2e/t of steel (2023), according to the GHG Protocol and worldsteel methodologies.
