PSA Carbon Agro Perene – Votorantim Reserves

WHAT IS IT

Reservas Votorantim has partnered with Citrosuco, the world's largest orange juice producer, and ECCON Soluções Ambientais to launch a new Payment for Environmental Services (PES) methodology, the PSA Carbon Agro Perene. This system aims to guarantee the provision of Environmental Services through remuneration of rural landowners, generating benefits for society and addressing the urgent needs of mitigating climate change, neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable food production.

The unprecedented PSA Carbon Agro is derived from another methodology, PSA Carbonflor, developed by ECCON with contributions from Reservas Votorantim, with the objective of generating carbon credits through conservation in forest areas. PSA Carbonflor has received wide recognition in Brazil and abroad and could be one of the main national methodologies to be applied in Brazil in the coming years.

The biggest differentiator of PSA Carbon Agro Perene is that it's a methodology for the carbon market in agribusiness, through the valuation of conservation combined with good agricultural practices. The document was open for public consultation until the end of 2024 and is currently being consolidated for official publication.

RESULTS AND OBJECTIVES

The PSA Carbon Agro Perene is a program that values and pays for Environmental Services and creates Carbon Credits Plus (C+) for properties with portions of preserved or conserved native areas and portions intended for the agricultural production of perennial crops, carried out in accordance with good practices that favor the maintenance of biomass, contributing to the mitigation of climate change.

Producers are compensated through Carbon Credits generated by the results of their Environmental Services, which impact Ecosystem Indicators and Good Agricultural Practices Indicators. This is achieved using service delivery metrics such as forest conservation, maintenance and improvement of water quality, maintenance of habitat for biodiversity (fauna and flora), ecosystem maintenance, provision of infrastructure to support good agricultural practices, good sustainable management practices, soil conservation, among others.

The measurement of Ecosystem Indicators and Agricultural Practice Indicators forms the basis for generating C+ credits, which serve as a means of payment for Environmental Services. This acts as a financial incentive for environmental conservation and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. In this way, Environmental Services, once recognized, valued, and validated, become transferable assets through C+ credits.

Reservas Votorantim has been working on projects and initiatives that contribute to the challenges of climate stability not only in Brazil, but worldwide. In the carbon sector, it pioneered the co-development of a first methodology for payment for environmental services, including forest carbon, in the Atlantic Forest. In this initiative, it joined forces with ECCON Soluções Ambientais and Citrosuco to offer a novel solution for generating carbon credits for agribusiness, which could be a viable option for many producers.
