WHAT IS IT
PRO Carbono Commodities offers an innovative solution for traders and industries that include agriculture in their supply chain, promoting the sustainable production of agricultural commodities such as soybeans, corn, and cotton. Using primary data to calculate carbon footprints on a large scale, we develop effective intervention plans to reduce emissions in agricultural operations. Our approach includes traceability of all production through blockchain technology, ensuring transparency throughout the value chain until the grain is delivered to the buyer. We are also committed to environmental preservation, ensuring that areas of native vegetation are not deforested. We promote sustainability throughout the supply chain in line with international market requirements. The solution enables verification of environmental compliance in accordance with the Brazilian Forest Code, promoting sustainability throughout the supply chain in line with international market requirements.
The commodity's carbon footprint is measured by Footprint PRO Carbon, a calculator developed in partnership with Embrapa, using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The final result is expressed in kg CO2 eq/ton of soybeans, a calculation that takes into account operational limits, from the input footprint, to field emissions and land-use change, and transportation to the trader.
The reliability of the information is verified through digital agronomic platforms that compile information on socio-environmental compliance, emissions inventories, monitoring criteria, and emissions management. The inventory inputs are primary data that undergo a rigorous collection and quality control process before being used as input to the calculator.
PRO Carbon Commodities aims to promote the production and sale of commodities cultivated using good field practices and free from deforestation, while also ensuring the preservation of local ecosystems in a safe, traceable, and scientifically recognized manner. This helps companies reduce their emissions while protecting forests. We also want to ensure that farmers in the program, in addition to avoiding deforestation and conversion, also adhere to socio-environmental criteria as eligibility criteria.
RESULTS AND OBJECTIVES
In May 2023, PRO Carbono Commodities delivered the first shipment of Brazilian soybeans with a measured carbon footprint and free of deforestation, covering 10 farmers in the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, covering an area of 159,000 hectares. A total of 240,000 tons of soybeans were registered, audited by Bureau Veritas, and delivered to ADM with certified origin, traceable production information, emissions calculations, and in line with socio-environmental analyses. Bayer calculated the project's average carbon footprint to be 925 kg CO2 eq/ton, 64% lower than the average carbon footprint of Brazilian soybeans, according to international databases.
Estimated project completion: 2025/2026.
